There’s something truly magical about London at Christmas, and after spending the holidays here with John, I can confidently say this city has earned a top spot on my list of favorite destinations. From the moment we arrived, London exceeded every expectation, the twinkling lights strung across every street and that unmistakable buzz of holiday cheer that seems to fill the air.

What struck me most was how effortlessly we could explore it all. London is wonderfully walkable, with each neighborhood flowing seamlessly into the next, and when our feet needed a rest, the Underground made getting around incredibly easy. We’d pop down into a Tube station and emerge minutes later in an entirely different part of the city, ready for our next adventure.

London truly goes all out for Christmas, the decorations, the window displays, the atmosphere, and experiencing it all with John made it even more special. We’ve already started talking about when we can return, because honestly, a few days here just wasn’t enough.

In this post, I’m sharing everything you need to plan your own magical London Christmas getaway. How to Get from London Airport Heathrow to City Center

The best and most budget-friendly way to get from Heathrow Airport to central London is definitely the Underground. It takes roughly the same amount of time as a taxi or Uber, about 30 to 45 minutes depending on your destination, but costs a fraction of the price. While an Uber can easily run over £100, a trip on the Tube will only set you back around £5. Simply hop on the Piccadilly Line eastbound toward central London, and either get off near your hotel or transfer to another line that gets you closer to your accommodation. We noticed that most travelers opt for the Underground, and after experiencing how efficient and affordable it is, we completely understood why.

Where to Stay in London: Hotel Recommendations

During our London trip, John and I stayed in two different hotels in different areas of the city, which gave us a chance to experience distinct neighborhoods and what they each have to offer. In the sections below, I’ll share what we loved about each stay, what didn’t quite work for us, and ultimately why I’d recommend them. Staying in different parts of London really helped us get a feel for the city’s diverse character, and I hope our experience helps you choose the perfect home base for your own Christmas adventure.

For the first part of our trip, we stayed at the Bedford Hotel, and I absolutely loved the location. The Piccadilly Line station was just a 3-minute walk away, which made getting around incredibly convenient, this line connects to most of the major tourist attractions we visited, from Covent Garden to Leicester Square. Beyond the excellent Tube access, the hotel’s neighborhood was fantastic for exploring on foot, with plenty of restaurants, cafes, and shops within easy walking distance. The Bedford is a three-star hotel, and while the beds were very comfortable and we slept well, the rooms were on the smaller side. For the second part of our trip, we stayed at the Hyatt Regency London Blackfriars, and it was a completely different experience. This five-star hotel delivered on every front, the customer service was excellent, and the room and bedding were absolutely perfect. The location was ideal for exploring South Bank attractions, with Borough Market just a 20-minute walk away. From there, you can easily stroll to the iconic Tower Bridge and enjoy stunning views overlooking the River Thames. Day 1: Camden Market, Afternoon Tea, and Christmas Lights in London

12 p.m. Once you arrive at your hotel, check in if your room is ready or leave your luggage with reception so you can start exploring London right away!

1 p.m. Take the Underground to Camden Market, one of London’s most vibrant and eclectic neighborhoods. This area is absolutely buzzing with energy and there’s so much to see and do, browse the stalls for a classic London souvenir hat, sample delicious street food from around the world, or hunt for unique vintage finds and handmade treasures. When you need a break, grab a latte or hot chocolate from Correto by the Canal, a charming coffee shop with beautiful views overlooking the water. It’s the perfect spot to warm up and soak in the Camden atmosphere.

4 p.m. Head back to your hotel to freshen up, relax for a bit, and change into something nice for afternoon tea.

6 p.m. Enjoy a beautiful and truly unique tea experience at Palm Court at The Langham. This was hands down John’s and my favorite afternoon tea in London! As you sip different teas, you’ll be serenaded by live music, creating an elegant and memorable atmosphere. Indulge in delicate pastries, warm scones with clotted cream, and perfectly crafted finger sandwiches. What I loved most was that you could order as many different tea flavors as you wanted, it was all included in the experience. The stunning space is perfect whether you’re looking for a romantic date night or a special outing with family and friends. And the service? Absolutely phenomenal. Every detail was thoughtfully executed, making this an afternoon tea we won’t soon forget.

8 p.m. After your wonderful tea experience, step outside and take a stroll down the famous Regent Street, which transforms into a winter wonderland during Christmas. The street is beautifully decorated with illuminated angels suspended overhead, creating a truly magical atmosphere. From there, make your way to nearby Carnaby Street, another must-see for Christmas lights. This iconic shopping district goes all out with its own unique festive decorations that are absolutely worth seeing. Both streets are within easy walking distance of each other, making it the perfect evening to soak in London’s dazzling Christmas spirit.

10 p.m. When you’re ready to call it a night, walk towards Piccadilly Circus Underground station to catch the Tube back to your hotel and rest up for another exciting day ahead.

Day 2: Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

8 a.m. Start your day bright and early with a walk to Big Ben. John and I love waking up early to watch cities come to life, and experiencing London in those quiet morning hours was absolutely magical. The streets were nearly empty, and it felt like we had the entire city to ourselves. Beyond the peaceful atmosphere, heading out early meant we could see Big Ben and Westminster Abbey before the crowds arrived. On our way, we stopped for coffee at WolfFox Coffee, which was perfectly located along our route and made for a great little morning pick-me-up.

9 a.m. Arrive at Big Ben and take in one of London’s most iconic landmarks, don’t forget to snap plenty of photos! From there, walk along Westminster Bridge and soak in the stunning views of the Thames, with the London Eye standing majestically across the river. The bridge offers some of the best vantage points in the city, especially in the soft morning light. Next, make your way to Westminster Abbey and admire its spectacular Gothic architecture from the outside. Even if you don’t go in, the exterior alone is breathtaking and absolutely worth seeing.

10 a.m. After seeing Westminster Abbey, walk towards the iconic Regency Café, and trust me, you’ll want to arrive early! This beloved local spot is always packed, and for good reason: they serve an absolutely delicious full English breakfast that includes tea or coffee, all for a really great price. The no-frills, old-school atmosphere adds to the charm, and it’s the perfect place to fuel up for the rest of your day. Just be prepared for a bit of a queue if you arrive later in the morning, it’s a London institution for a reason!

11 a.m. After your delicious English breakfast, make your way to Buckingham Palace to see the official residence of the British Royal Family. Take some time to admire the iconic facade and snap photos at the famous gates. Afterward, take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful St. James’s Park, one of London’s most picturesque green spaces. The park offers lovely views of the palace and is especially charming during the winter months, with peaceful paths perfect for a relaxing walk.

12:30 p.m. For a quick rest, head to EL&N London Park Lane for a latte and pastry at this Instagram-worthy café right across from Hyde Park.

1:30 p.m. Head to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland and prepare to spend your entire afternoon immersed in this enchanting Christmas experience. This massive festive celebration has something for everyone, thrilling rides, cozy food stalls serving seasonal treats, incredible attractions, live music and performances, and charming Christmas markets filled with unique gifts and handmade crafts. What makes Winter Wonderland so special is that each village within the park is uniquely decorated with its own distinct vibe and theme, making every corner feel like a new discovery. Warm up with a cup of mulled wine as you wander through the twinkling lights and festive atmosphere. John and I absolutely loved this place, it perfectly captures the magic of a London Christmas. Some of our favorite spots were the lively beer gardens, the Carousel Bar and Luminarie Bar (yes, an actual spinning carousel where you can grab a drink!) The energy is infectious, and whether you’re riding the attractions, browsing for souvenirs, or simply soaking in the holiday spirit with a drink in hand, you’ll find yourself not wanting to leave. Plan to spend at least a few hours here; there’s truly so much to see and do.

5 p.m. On your way to afternoon tea, take a stroll down New Bond Street, one of London’s most luxurious shopping destinations. This elegant street is home to high-end boutiques and flagship stores including Cartier, Rolex, and other prestigious brands. Even if you’re not shopping, it’s worth walking through to admire the beautiful storefronts. Don’t miss the famous Ralph’s Coffee at New Bond Street.

6 p.m. Enjoy an afternoon tea at The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon at Fortnum & Mason, a truly special venue that was opened in 2012 by Queen Elizabeth II herself. The salon’s beautifully feminine décor, think soft pastels, elegant furnishings, and refined details, creates the perfect atmosphere to relax and unwind after a day of exploring London. We opted for the High Tea experience, which comes with a small savory plate instead of the traditional finger sandwiches, along with the classic scones and pastries. The afternoon tea service here is exceptional, with classic treats and an impressive tea selection that lives up to Fortnum & Mason’s legendary reputation. Just be sure to make reservations well in advance, as this popular spot fills up quickly.

8 p.m. After enjoying your tea experience, take some time to explore the different floors of Fortnum & Mason. This iconic department store is a treasure trove of beautifully curated goods, from elegant kitchenware and home décor items to their world-famous teas and gourmet food hampers. It’s the perfect place to pick up unique souvenirs or gifts, and even just browsing feels like a special experience.

9:30 p.m. Head back to your hotel to rest and recharge after a full day of adventures!

Day 3: Borough Market, Tower Bridge Walk, and Covent Garden

12 p.m. Walk or take the Underground to Borough Market, one of London’s oldest and most famous food markets. Take your time wandering through the vibrant stalls filled with fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, baked goods, and international street food, it’s a foodie’s paradise. If you’re planning to have lunch at one of the pubs near the market, make sure to book a reservation in advance, or you’ll likely face a long wait. John and I had lunch at Applebee’s Fish & Seafood, located right across from Borough Market, and we really enjoyed our meal. The fresh seafood was excellent and the location was perfect.

3 p.m. After exploring Borough Market, head to The Queen’s Walk, a scenic walkway that runs along the River Thames with stunning city views. During the holiday season, you’ll find a festive market stretching along the path. Make your way towards the iconic Tower Bridge and Tower of London, and I highly recommend timing this walk for around sunset, the views are absolutely phenomenal. It’s one of those magical London moments that’s perfect for photos and simply soaking in the beauty of the city.

5 p.m. From the Tower of London, take the Underground to Covent Garden. As soon as you exit the station, you’ll be absolutely mesmerized by the festive atmosphere. The area is beautifully decorated for Christmas, with twinkling lights and stunning displays at every turn. Head to the Apple Market to browse local vendors selling handmade crafts, jewelry, and unique gifts while enjoying live music that fills the historic market hall. Take your time wandering through Covent Garden’s charming cobblestone streets, popping into boutique shops, and soaking in the lively energy. It’s one of London’s most enchanting neighborhoods, especially during the holiday season.

6 p.m. As you make your way to Leicester Square, take a detour through Chinatown in the West End. This vibrant neighborhood is packed with authentic Chinese restaurants, bakeries, and shops, making it a feast for the senses. The area is especially striking with its colorful Chinese lanterns suspended overhead, creating a beautiful canopy of lights above the streets. It’s worth wandering through even if you’re not stopping to eat.

7 p.m. Arrive at Leicester Square and explore the lively Christmas market set up in the heart of this bustling area. You’ll find plenty of food stalls, festive drinks, and local vendors selling holiday gifts and crafts. There’s even an ice skating rink if you’re feeling adventurous! If you’re craving a warm cup of tea to fend off the chill, head to TWG Tea nearby. 8:30 p.m. If you get hungry, head to Kingly Court, a fantastic three-story venue packed with diverse bars and restaurants to suit every taste. The space features a beautiful courtyard with outdoor seating (complete with heaters during winter), creating a lively yet intimate atmosphere. John and I had dinner at Señor Ceviche Peruvian Restaurant, and it was absolutely wonderful, super cozy with delicious food and the perfect ambiance for a romantic dinner. With so many dining options under one roof, Kingly Court is ideal whether you’re in the mood for Asian cuisine, Mediterranean fare, or something else entirely.

Esta masiva celebración festiva tiene algo para todos: emocionantes atracciones, acogedores puestos de comida sirviendo delicias de temporada, increíbles atracciones, música en vivo y espectáculos, y encantadores mercados navideños llenos de regalos únicos y artesanías hechas a mano. Lo que hace especial a Winter Wonderland es que cada villa dentro del parque está decorada de manera única con su propia vibra y tema distintivo, haciendo que cada rincón se sienta como un nuevo descubrimiento. Caliéntate con una copa de vino caliente mientras paseas por las luces parpadeantes y el ambiente festivo. A John y a mí nos encantó absolutamente este lugar; captura perfectamente la magia de una Navidad londinense. Algunos de nuestros lugares favoritos fueron los animados jardines de cerveza, el Carousel Bar y el Luminarie Bar (¡sí, un carrusel giratorio real donde puedes tomar una bebida!). La energía es contagiosa, y ya sea que estés en las atracciones, buscando recuerdos, o simplemente disfrutando del espíritu navideño con una bebida en la mano, te encontrarás sin querer irte. Planea pasar al menos unas horas aquí; realmente hay mucho por ver y hacer.

5 p.m. En tu camino al afternoon tea, da un paseo por New Bond Street, uno de los destinos de compras más lujosos de Londres. Esta elegante calle alberga boutiques de alta gama y tiendas insignia que incluyen Cartier, Rolex y otras marcas prestigiosas. Incluso si no estás comprando, vale la pena caminar por ahí para admirar las hermosas vitrinas. No te pierdas el famoso Ralph’s Coffee en New Bond Street.

6 p.m. Disfruta de un afternoon tea en The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon at Fortnum & Mason, un lugar verdaderamente especial que fue inaugurado en 2012 por la propia Reina Isabel II. La decoración bellamente femenina del salón, con pasteles suaves, muebles elegantes y detalles refinados, crea la atmósfera perfecta para relajarse y descansar después de un día explorando Londres. Optamos por la experiencia High Tea, que viene con un pequeño plato salado en lugar de los tradicionales sándwiches, junto con los clásicos scones y pasteles. El servicio de afternoon tea aquí es excepcional, con delicias clásicas y una impresionante selección de té que está a la altura de la legendaria reputación de Fortnum & Mason. Solo asegúrate de hacer reservaciones con mucha anticipación, ya que este popular lugar se llena rápidamente.

8 p.m. Después de disfrutar tu experiencia de té, tómate un tiempo para explorar los diferentes pisos de Fortnum & Mason. Día 3: Borough Market, Caminata por Tower Bridge y Covent Garden

12 p.m. Camina o toma el Metro hacia Borough Market, uno de los mercados de alimentos más antiguos y famosos de Londres. Tómate tu tiempo paseando por los vibrantes puestos llenos de productos frescos, quesos artesanales, productos horneados y comida callejera internacional; es un paraíso para los amantes de la comida. Si planeas almorzar en uno de los pubs cerca del mercado, asegúrate de hacer una reservación con anticipación, o probablemente enfrentarás una larga espera. John y yo almorzamos en Applebee’s Fish & Seafood, ubicado justo frente a Borough Market, y realmente disfrutamos nuestra comida. El marisco fresco fue excelente y la ubicación era perfecta.

3 p.m. Después de explorar Borough Market, dirígete a The Queen’s Walk, un pintoresco paseo que corre a lo largo del río Támesis con impresionantes vistas de la ciudad. Durante la temporada navideña, encontrarás un mercado festivo que se extiende a lo largo del camino. El área está hermosamente decorada para Navidad, con luces parpadeantes y exhibiciones impresionantes en cada esquina. Dirígete al Apple Market para explorar vendedores locales que venden artesanías hechas a mano, joyería y regalos únicos mientras disfrutas de música en vivo que llena el histórico salón del mercado. Tómate tu tiempo paseando por las encantadoras calles empedradas de Covent Garden, entrando a tiendas boutique y disfrutando de la energía animada. Es uno de los vecindarios más encantadores de Londres, especialmente durante la temporada navideña.

Esta boutique de té de lujo ofrece una increíble selección de tés únicos y premium, perfectos para calentarte o para comprar un recuerdo especial para llevar a casa. El ambiente acogedor lo convierte en un lugar ideal para tomar un descanso antes de continuar tu noche.

8:30 p.m. Si tienes hambre, dirígete a Kingly Court, un fantástico lugar de tres pisos lleno de diversos bares y restaurantes para todos los gustos. El espacio cuenta con un hermoso patio con asientos al aire libre (completo con calentadores durante el invierno), creando una atmósfera animada pero íntima. John y yo cenamos en Señor Ceviche Peruvian Restaurant, y fue absolutamente maravilloso: súper acogedor con deliciosa comida y el ambiente perfecto para una cena romántica. Con tantas opciones gastronómicas bajo un mismo techo, Kingly Court es ideal ya sea que estés de humor para cocina asiática, mediterránea o algo completamente diferente.

10 p.m. Cuando estés listo para terminar el día, camina hacia la estación del Metro Piccadilly Circus para tomar el Metro de regreso a tu hotel.
