Intro

When John and I discovered that Albuquerque was just a two-hour flight from Houston, we knew we had found our next weekend adventure. The Land of Enchantment had been calling our name, and this New Mexico gem proved to be the perfect quick getaway for when you need a break from the Texas heat.

Honestly, this trip exceeded every expectation. We spent three days exploring Albuquerque hand-in-hand, bouncing between rooftop bars with insane city views, and getting completely lost in the art and culture scene. And don’t even get me started on the food, New Mexico knows what’s up with their green and red chile situation.

What I loved most was how different everything felt from home. Walking through adobe buildings that have been standing for centuries, watching local artists create beautiful pottery and jewelry, and experiencing traditions that blend Native American and Spanish influences, it was exactly the kind of reset we needed.

I’m breaking down our entire 3-day itinerary in this post so you guys can have the same amazing experience we did. Trust me, the Land of Enchantment lives up to its name, and it’s basically in our backyard. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or just need to switch up your scenery, Albuquerque is calling your name!

The Best Way to Explore Albuquerque

The best way to explore Albuquerque is definitely renting a car. When we landed, getting to the rental car center was super easy, there’s a shuttle that runs from the airport and it took maybe five minutes. We rented from Enterprise and the whole process was so smooth. Having our own car made it possible to explore everything at our own pace without worrying about rideshares or schedules, which honestly made the trip so much better.

Where to Stay in Albuquerque?

We stayed at Stay Old Town Road in the Casita de Padre, a beautifully restored adobe home built in the late 1800s. There’s something really special about staying in a historic home like this, it added so much character to our trip! The property has been lovingly renovated with careful attention to detail, honoring its rich history while providing all the modern comforts you need. It was incredibly comfortable and felt like the perfect home base for exploring Albuquerque. Day 1: National Hispanic Cultural Center, Sawmill Market & Downtown Albuquerque

11 a.m. Arrive at Albuquerque International Sunport, and the moment you step off the plane, you’ll be immersed in the stunning southwestern architecture and cultural décor of this beautiful airport. John and I were genuinely amazed by how gorgeous it is, the mountain views visible as you walk toward the exit make it feel like an experience in itself. The airport also features local gifts from talented artisans and authentic New Mexican food, giving you a true taste of the region before you even leave the terminal.

12:30 p.m. For lunch, we headed to La Guelaguetza in Albuquerque’s South Valley, and wow, this place is a hidden gem! It’s an award-winning restaurant specializing in dishes from the Mexican state of Oaxaca, and the food is next level. We ordered the Mole Enchiladas, which feature authentic Oaxacan mole, and here’s the best part, you can get them with their three different types of mole so you can try them all! They were absolutely incredible. Pair it with their agua de horchata, which is perfectly sweet and refreshing.

2 p.m. Next, head to The National Hispanic Cultural Center it’s the only one of its kind in the entire United States! This place is seriously incredible. The main highlight is Mundos de Mestizaje, the largest concave fresco in North America, and when I tell you it took our breath away, I mean it. This stunning masterpiece was created by artist Frederico Vigil and took him 10 years to complete. It depicts centuries of Hispanic and Latino history across this massive concave dome, and standing underneath it is just awe-inspiring. The detail, the colors, the storytelling… we just stood there staring up at it trying to take it all in. You can really feel the dedication and passion that went into every brushstroke.

Make sure to also explore the Art Museum while you’re there. It showcases Hispanic, Chicano, Latino, and Latin American art from so many different perspectives and time periods. John and I were both really moved by how powerful and diverse the collection is. It’s such an important cultural institution, and honestly, it gave us a whole new appreciation for the rich Latino heritage that’s woven into Albuquerque’s identity. This is a must-visit, you won’t regret it!

4:30 p.m. After all that exploring, head back to your stay to check in, freshen up, and get ready for a fun night out!

6 p.m. For dinner, we headed to Sawmill Market, which is this really cool food hall with so many options, seriously, something for everyone! We were craving something fresh and light, so we went with Catch Santa Fe Poke Co. and it did not disappoint. All their bowls are 100% gluten-free, which is awesome. Of course, since we’re in New Mexico, we had to try the Hatch Green Chile bowl. We also got the Leche de Tigre Salmon and both were so flavorful and delicious. To drink we grabbed horchata waters from The Paleta Bar, which were the perfect pairing. The vibe at Sawmill Market is super laid-back and fun, plus you can wander around and check out all the other vendors while you eat!

7:30 p.m. After exploring the food hall, head over to Town & Ranch. This place has such a cool eclectic throwback vibe and it’s located right in Downtown Albuquerque. We tried their lavender gin and tonic and it was incredible! They distill one of the best gins in the entire country right there! If you don’t drink alcohol, no worries, they also have some really good mocktails so everyone can enjoy the experience. The atmosphere is super chill and it’s the perfect spot to wind down after a full day of exploring!

9 p.m. To end the night, we made our way to Apothecary Lounge, located on the rooftop of Hotel Parq Central right on historic Route 66. This place is seriously one of the top bars in Albuquerque, and for good reason! They specialize in seasonal cocktails that are so well-crafted and delicious. The view from up there is beautiful, and we loved sinking into their cozy outdoor furniture with our drinks, just taking in the night air and the city below. It was honestly the perfect way to wrap up our first night in Albuquerque, relaxed, romantic, and with that New Mexico magic all around us.

Day 2: Old Town Albuquerque Art Tour, Galleries & Flamenco Show

9 a.m. Start your morning at Golden Crown Panaderia, an iconic Albuquerque bakery that’s been a local favorite for years. We grabbed their famous biscochitos, New Mexico’s official state cookie. Everything is baked fresh and the smell alone when you walk in is incredible. It’s the perfect spot to fuel up before a day of exploring!

10 a.m. After breakfast, we did the Albuquerque Old Town Art & History Tour with Mary Dezember, a local art insider. This isn’t just your typical walking tour, you actually get to experience Old Town through its art and learn about the people who helped shape the community over the years. We visited local galleries, saw both historic and contemporary pieces, and the coolest part? We got to meet the artists in person and hear their stories firsthand. John and I loved being able to talk to them about their work and creative process, it made the whole experience so much more personal and meaningful. If you want to really understand Albuquerque, its culture, and what makes Old Town so special, I can’t recommend this tour enough. Mary is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, and you’ll walk away with a deeper appreciation for the city and its artistic community. Plus, you might even find some beautiful pieces to take home! This tour also includes museum admission to the Albuquerque Museum and parking.

12:30 p.m. After the walking tour, we grabbed lunch at Gobble This for some amazing Salvadorian food! Everything is incredibly fresh and made to order by Chef Nestor, you can literally taste the difference. The coolest thing about this spot is that they don’t have a set menu; it changes daily based on what’s fresh and what Chef Nestor is creating that day. Make sure to check out their Instagram to see what they’re serving and to book your meal in advance. It’s such a unique dining experience and the food is absolutely delicious.

2 p.m. Spend the afternoon exploring Old Town and its charming patios, this area is packed with incredible galleries that you absolutely need to check out! Start with Lapis Room, a vibrant art center dedicated to showcasing thought-provoking and beautiful contemporary works. Make sure to check their website before you go because they always have fun events and exhibitions happening. Next, visit Shi Yazhi Sage Gallery & Studio owned by Daniel, who is one of the few artists who still paints right in his own gallery! How cool is that? The gallery features a stunning collection of traditional and contemporary Native American art with a focus on the Southwest region. We loved getting to see him work and talk to him about his pieces.

Don’t miss Penfield Gallery of Indian Arts either, they have an amazing selection of Native American pottery, arts, and crafts. This place has been in New Mexico for over 100 years, so you know they’re the real deal! And if you love photography, stop by Albuquerque Photographers Gallery, which showcases beautiful work by talented local photographers. The pieces here are absolutely stunning.

When you need a coffee break, head to Blackbird Coffee House and try their signature Blackbird Latte made with New Mexico Red Chile! I know it sounds wild, but trust me, we tried it and it was so good! The coffee shop itself is nestled inside a patio with a lovely garden view, and the interior has gorgeous murals and art even on the windows. It’s such a cozy and artistic space to recharge before continuing your gallery hopping!

5 p.m. After a full morning and afternoon of exploring Old Town, head back to your stay to relax, recharge, and freshen up. Trust me, you’ll want to take a breather and change before heading out for another fun night in Albuquerque!

7 p.m. For dinner, we had the most incredible experience at Tablao Flamenco! This place offers a multi-course meal paired with a world-class flamenco performance, and it was absolutely mesmerizing. Fun fact: did you know that Albuquerque is actually the Flamenco Capital of North America? Crazy, right? So seeing a live flamenco show here is basically a must-do! We were blown away by the talent and passion of the performers, and what made it even more special was how intimate the setting was. You’re right there, so close to the dancers, you can feel the energy and hear every footstep. It was such a unique and memorable evening. Definitely make reservations in advance because this place fills up fast, and for good reason!

9:30 p.m. If you’re not ready to call it a night yet, check out Level 5, the rooftop bar inside Hotel Chaco. This place is absolutely stunning! It the perfect place to enjoy drinks at sunset, but even if you miss the sunset, the city lights twinkling below are just as magical. This rooftop seriously has one of the best views in all of Albuquerque.

Day 3: Final Morning in Albuquerque – Breakfast & Mountain Views

9 a.m. Start your morning with a classic New Mexican breakfast at Duran’s Central Pharmacy, an iconic Albuquerque eatery located right on historic Route 66. This place is so cool, it’s literally a working pharmacy with a diner inside! While you wait for your table, you can browse around and shop for unique finds, which we thought was pretty fun. Pro tip: get there early because the line can get long, especially on weekends. Once you’re seated, you absolutely have to try their hand-rolled tortillas with butter, they’re made fresh and are so good! We ordered the Duran’s Style Huevos Rancheros and the Carne Adovada Plate, and both were incredible. The flavors were authentic and delicious, and the portions were generous. It’s the perfect way to fuel up for your last day of exploring Albuquerque!

10:30 a.m. Next stop is the Sandia Peak Tramway, which was one of the highlights of our trip! The ride to the top takes about 15 minutes, and watching the landscape completely transform as you climb higher is absolutely mesmerizing. Once you’re at the top, the views of Albuquerque are unreal. There’s a restaurant up there called Ten 3, but heads up, you’ll want to make reservations well in advance if you want to eat there. We grabbed drinks and snacks at the bar which also has gorgeous views and a more relaxed vibe, plus you don’t need a reservation. Seriously, this is a must-do when you visit Albuquerque. The whole experience is just breathtaking, and it gives you such a cool perspective of the city and the surrounding mountains. Don’t skip this one!

12:30 p.m. For lunch and on your way back to the airport, stop at Itality. It’s a Pueblo Native woman-owned vegan eatery, and even if you’re not vegan, trust me on this one. We ordered the Bluecorn Waffles and they were absolutely incredible, like, I didn’t know vegan food could taste this good. My boyfriend got the Hey Miss Enchilada and was obsessed. And you HAVE to try their drinks, we got the Lime Chia RefreshMINT and Prickly Pear Lemonade to share, and honestly, they were the perfect refreshing combo. Everything was so flavorful and unique!

2 p.m. Head back to Albuquerque International Sunport, to catch your flight home after an amazing weekend in the Land of Enchantment! Before you board, don’t forget to check out the local vendors at the terminal, they have some really cool and unique New Mexican products, art, and souvenirs that make perfect gifts for loved ones (or yourself!).

Dia de Los Muertos in Albuquerque

For this trip, we chose to visit Albuquerque during Día de los Muertos, a deeply meaningful time of year for me to honor my ancestors and remember loved ones who have passed. It was a beautiful and enriching experience to witness how Albuquerque celebrates and honors this sacred tradition. Old Town hosts a 10-day celebration filled with vibrant marigolds, carefully crafted altars, and heartfelt ofrendas that pay tribute to those who came before us. The entire area comes alive with culture, color, and community during this special time. La Mejor Manera de Explorar Albuquerque

La mejor manera de explorar Albuquerque es definitivamente rentando un auto. Cuando aterrizamos, llegar al centro de renta de autos fue súper fácil, hay un shuttle que sale del aeropuerto y tomó como cinco minutos. Rentamos con Enterprise y todo el proceso fue muy sencillo. Tener nuestro propio auto hizo posible explorar todo a nuestro ritmo sin preocuparnos por rideshares o horarios, lo cual honestamente hizo el viaje mucho mejor.

¿Dónde Hospedarse en Albuquerque?

Nos hospedamos en Stay Old Town Road en la Casita de Padre, una hermosa casa de adobe restaurada construida a finales de los 1800s. Hay algo realmente especial en quedarse en una casa histórica como esta, ¡le añadió tanto carácter a nuestro viaje! La propiedad ha sido renovada con amor y cuidadosa atención al detalle, honrando su rica historia mientras ofrece todas las comodidades modernas que necesitas. Fue increíblemente cómoda y se sintió como la base perfecta para explorar Albuquerque. Día 1: Centro Cultural Hispano Nacional, Sawmill Market y el Centro de Albuquerque

11 a.m. Llega al Albuquerque International Sunport, y en el momento en que te bajes del avión, estarás inmerso en la impresionante arquitectura del suroeste y la decoración cultural de este hermoso aeropuerto. John y yo quedamos genuinamente sorprendidos de lo hermoso que es, las vistas de las montañas visibles mientras caminas hacia la salida hacen que se sienta como una experiencia en sí misma. El aeropuerto también cuenta con regalos locales de talentosos artesanos y auténtica comida de Nuevo México, dándote un verdadero sabor de la región antes de que siquiera salgas de la terminal.

12:30 p.m. Para el almuerzo, fuimos a La Guelaguetza en el South Valley de Albuquerque, y wow, ¡este lugar es una joya escondida! Es un restaurante galardonado especializado en platillos del estado mexicano de Oaxaca, y la comida es de otro nivel. Ordenamos las Enchiladas de Mole, que tienen auténtico mole oaxaqueño, y aquí está lo mejor, ¡puedes pedirlas con sus tres diferentes tipos de mole para probarlos todos! Estaban absolutamente increíbles. Acompáñalas con su agua de horchata, que es perfectamente dulce y refrescante.

2 p.m. Luego, dirígete al Centro Cultural Hispano Nacional, ¡es el único de su tipo en todo Estados Unidos! Este lugar es seriamente increíble. Lo más destacado es Mundos de Mestizaje, el fresco cóncavo más grande de Norteamérica, y cuando te digo que nos dejó sin aliento, lo digo en serio. Esta impresionante obra maestra fue creada por el artista Frederico Vigil y le tomó 10 años completarla. Representa siglos de historia hispana y latina a través de esta enorme cúpula cóncava, y estar parado debajo de ella es simplemente inspirador. El detalle, los colores, la narrativa… simplemente nos quedamos ahí mirando hacia arriba tratando de absorberlo todo. Realmente puedes sentir la dedicación y pasión que se puso en cada pincelada.

Asegúrate de también explorar el Museo de Arte mientras estés ahí. Muestra arte hispano, chicano, latino y latinoamericano desde tantas perspectivas y períodos de tiempo diferentes. John y yo quedamos realmente conmovidos por lo poderosa y diversa que es la colección. Es una institución cultural tan importante, y honestamente, nos dio una nueva apreciación por la rica herencia latina que está tejida en la identidad de Albuquerque. Esta es una visita obligada, ¡no te arrepentirás!

4:30 p.m. Después de toda esa exploración, regresa a tu hospedaje para hacer check-in, refrescarte y prepararte para una noche divertida.

6 p.m. Para la cena, fuimos a Sawmill Market, que es un food hall muy cool con tantas opciones, ¡en serio, algo para todos! Teníamos antojo de algo fresco y ligero, así que fuimos con Catch Santa Fe Poke Co. y no decepcionó. Todos sus bowls son 100% libres de gluten, lo cual es increíble. Por supuesto, como estamos en Nuevo México, tuvimos que probar el bowl de Hatch Green Chile. También pedimos el Leche de Tigre Salmon y ambos estaban tan llenos de sabor y deliciosos. Para beber agarramos aguas de horchata de The Paleta Bar, que fueron el maridaje perfecto. El ambiente en Sawmill Market es súper relajado y divertido, además puedes caminar y ver todos los otros vendedores mientras comes.

7:30 p.m. Después de explorar el food hall, dirígete a  Town & Ranch. Este lugar tiene una vibra ecléctica retro súper cool y está ubicado en el centro de Albuquerque. Probamos su gin tonic de lavanda y ¡estuvo increíble! ¡Destilan uno de los mejores gins de todo el país ahí mismo! Si no tomas alcohol, no hay problema, también tienen muy buenos mocktails para que todos puedan disfrutar la experiencia. La atmósfera es súper relajada y es el lugar perfecto para relajarte después de un día completo de exploración.

9 p.m. Para terminar la noche, nos fuimos a Apothecary Lounge, ubicado en la azotea del Hotel Parq Central justo en la histórica Ruta 66. Este lugar es seriamente uno de los mejores bares de Albuquerque, ¡y con razón! Se especializan en cócteles de temporada que están tan bien hechos y deliciosos. La vista desde ahí arriba es hermosa, y nos encantó hundirnos en sus cómodos muebles de exterior con nuestras bebidas, simplemente disfrutando el aire nocturno y la ciudad abajo. Honestamente fue la manera perfecta de terminar nuestra primera noche en Albuquerque, relajados, románticos, y con esa magia de Nuevo México a nuestro alrededor.

Día 2: Tour de Arte de Old Town Albuquerque, Galerías y Show de Flamenco

9 a.m. Comienza tu mañana en Golden Crown Panaderia, una panadería icónica de Albuquerque que ha sido favorita local por años. Agarramos sus famosos biscochitos, la galleta oficial del estado de Nuevo México. Todo está horneado fresco y el olor solo al entrar es increíble. ¡Es el lugar perfecto para llenarte de energía antes de un día de exploración!

10 a.m. Después del desayuno, hicimos el Albuquerque Old Town Art & History Tour con Mary Dezember, una experta local en arte. Este no es tu típico tour a pie, realmente llegas a experimentar Old Town a través de su arte y aprendes sobre las personas que ayudaron a formar la comunidad a través de los años. Visitamos galerías locales, vimos piezas tanto históricas como contemporáneas, y ¿la parte más cool? Conocimos a los artistas en persona y escuchamos sus historias de primera mano. A John y a mí nos encantó poder hablar con ellos sobre su trabajo y proceso creativo, hizo toda la experiencia mucho más personal y significativa. Si realmente quieres entender Albuquerque, su cultura, y qué hace a Old Town tan especial, no puedo recomendar este tour lo suficiente. Mary es increíblemente conocedora y apasionada, y saldrás con una apreciación más profunda por la ciudad y su comunidad artística. Además, ¡podrías incluso encontrar algunas piezas hermosas para llevarte a casa! Este tour también incluye admisión al Museo de Albuquerque y estacionamiento.

12:30 p.m. Después del tour, agarramos almuerzo en Gobble This para comida salvadoreña increíble. Todo es increíblemente fresco y hecho al momento por el Chef Nestor, literalmente puedes notar la diferencia. Cuando necesites un break de café, ve a Blackbird Coffee House y prueba su Blackbird Latte característico hecho con Chile Rojo de Nuevo México. Sé que suena loco, pero créeme, lo probamos y ¡estaba tan bueno! La cafetería está ubicada dentro de un patio con una hermosa vista al jardín, y el interior tiene murales hermosos y arte incluso en las ventanas. ¡Es un espacio tan acogedor y artístico para recargar energías antes de continuar tu recorrido por las galerías!

5 p.m. Después de una mañana y tarde completa explorando Old Town, regresa a tu hospedaje para relajarte, recargarte y refrescarte. Créeme, querrás tomar un respiro y cambiarte antes de salir para otra noche divertida en Albuquerque.

7 p.m. Para la cena, tuvimos la experiencia más increíble en Tablao Flamenco. Este lugar ofrece una cena de varios tiempos acompañada de una presentación de flamenco de clase mundial, y fue absolutamente fascinante. Dato curioso: ¿sabías que Albuquerque es realmente la Capital del Flamenco de Norteamérica? ¿Loco, verdad? Así que ver un show de flamenco en vivo aquí es básicamente algo que debes hacer. Quedamos impresionados por el talento y la pasión de los artistas, y lo que lo hizo aún más especial fue lo íntimo del lugar. Estás ahí, tan cerca de los bailarines, puedes sentir la energía y escuchar cada paso. Fue una noche tan única y memorable. Definitivamente haz reservaciones con anticipación porque este lugar se llena rápido, ¡y con razón!

9:30 p.m. Si no estás listo para terminar la noche todavía, visita Level 5, el bar en la terraza dentro del Hotel Chaco. ¡Este lugar es absolutamente impresionante! Es el lugar perfecto para disfrutar bebidas al atardecer, pero incluso si te pierdes el atardecer, las luces de la ciudad brillando abajo son igual de mágicas. Esta terraza seriamente tiene una de las mejores vistas de todo Albuquerque.

Día 3: Última Mañana en Albuquerque – Desayuno y Vistas de las Montañas

9 a.m. Comienza tu mañana con un clásico desayuno neomexicano en Duran’s Central Pharmacy, un restaurante icónico de Albuquerque ubicado justo en la histórica Ruta 66. Este lugar es tan cool, ¡es literalmente una farmacia en funcionamiento con un diner adentro! Mientras esperas tu mesa, puedes caminar y comprar cosas únicas, lo cual nos pareció bastante divertido. Consejo: llega temprano porque la fila puede ponerse larga, especialmente los fines de semana. Una vez que estés sentado, absolutamente tienes que probar sus tortillas hechas a mano con mantequilla, ¡están hechas frescas y son tan buenas! Ordenamos los Huevos Rancheros estilo Duran’s y el Plato de Carne Adovada, y ambos estuvieron increíbles. Los sabores eran auténticos y deliciosos, y las porciones generosas. ¡Es la manera perfecta de llenarte de energía para tu último día explorando Albuquerque!

10:30 a.m. La siguiente parada es el Sandia Peak Tramway, ¡que fue uno de los puntos destacados de nuestro viaje! El viaje a la cima toma alrededor de 15 minutos, y ver el paisaje transformarse completamente mientras subes más alto es absolutamente fascinante. Una vez que estés en la cima, las vistas de Albuquerque son irreales. Hay un restaurante ahí arriba llamado Ten 3, pero ojo, querrás hacer reservaciones con bastante anticipación si quieres comer ahí. Nosotros agarramos bebidas y snacks en el bar que también tiene vistas hermosas y un ambiente más relajado, además no necesitas reservación. En serio, esto es algo que debes hacer cuando visites Albuquerque. Toda la experiencia es simplemente impresionante, y te da una perspectiva tan cool de la ciudad y las montañas alrededor. ¡No te lo saltes!

12:30 p.m. Para el almuerzo y de camino al aeropuerto, para en Itality. Es un restaurante vegano de mujeres nativas Pueblo, y aunque no seas vegano, créeme en esta. Ordenamos los Bluecorn Waffles y estuvieron absolutamente increíbles, tipo, no sabía que la comida vegana podía saber tan bien. Mi novio pidió la Hey Miss Enchilada y quedó obsesionado. Y TIENES que probar sus bebidas, pedimos la Lime Chia RefreshMINT y la Prickly Pear Lemonade para compartir, y honestamente, fueron la combinación refrescante perfecta. ¡Todo estaba tan lleno de sabor y único!

2 p.m. Regresa al Albuquerque International Sunport, para tomar tu vuelo a casa después de un fin de semana increíble en la Tierra del Encanto. Antes de abordar, no olvides revisar los vendedores locales en la terminal, tienen productos, arte y souvenirs de Nuevo México realmente cool y únicos que son regalos perfectos para tus seres queridos (¡o para ti mismo!).

Día de los Muertos en Albuquerque

Para este viaje, elegimos visitar Albuquerque durante el Día de los Muertos, una época del año profundamente significativa para mí para honrar a mis ancestros y recordar a los seres queridos que han partido. Fue una experiencia hermosa y enriquecedora presenciar cómo Albuquerque celebra y honra esta tradición sagrada. Old Town alberga una celebración de 10 días llena de vibrantes cempasúchiles, altares cuidadosamente elaborados y ofrendas sinceras que rinden homenaje a quienes vinieron antes que nosotros. Toda el área cobra vida con cultura, color y comunidad durante este tiempo especial.
