New Braunfels and Gruene are perfect Texas destinations for travelers seeking a blend of natural beauty, rich history, and classic Texas charm. These two towns are between Austin and San Antonio, and they offer something for everyone. In New Braunfels, the refreshing Guadalupe and Comal Rivers invite you to float and cool off, while the city’s German heritage adds a unique cultural twist to the area. A short 12 minutes drive away, Gruene’s historic district feels like stepping back in time, with its iconic dance hall, antique shops, and riverside dining. Whether you’re exploring the scenic Texas Hill Country, enjoying local wines, or catching live music in a century-old venue, New Braunfels and Gruene promise an unforgettable Texas experience.

This 3-day itinerary will show you some of my favorite places to explore in New Braunfels and Gruene to have an amazing time with family or friends.

Where to Stay

Hacienda del Rio – a riverfront hotel in New Braunfels, close to downtown Gruene. It’s perfect for families, with a swimming pool, firepits, and volleyball. You can go tubing right from the hotel—no need to go anywhere else! In the summer, enjoy live music on-site. The club serves drinks and coffee, making it easy to relax after a fun day. A great spot for both adventure and relaxation!

The Resort at Schlitterbahn – Has a variety of rooms, suites, and apartment lofts. This place is in an ideal location to attractions and dining in New Braunfels. My family and I have stayed here several times and we loved how we can be right in the park.

River Run Condos – This a spacious condo for up to 6 people. The condo has a double balcony with a nice view of the river. It’s right next to Texas Tubes, so if you are planning on tubing this is a great spot to stay in. It also has a pool and BBQ pits right by the river. We stayed at this condo for my mom’s birthday a year ago and we really loved it. It’s also within walking distance to the downtown area of New Braunfels.

Day 1

4 p.m. Arrive to your lodging and check in.

6 p.m. Head to Downtown Social to enjoy a delicious pizza. And then enjoy a bowling or play at the arcade games. If you love visiting historic buildings, you will love to know that this was the once the home of the Gerlich Auto Company: the original Ford dealers in Texas. 

8 p.m. Walk next door Pour Haus for drinks and live music. This is one of my favorite bars in New Braunfels because they have a big outdoor patio, the atmosphere is always very lively, and they have live music 7 nights a week.

11 p.m. After a fun night out in New Braunfels go back to your lodging to get some rest.

Day 2

8 a.m. Grab coffee and pastries at 2tarts Bakery, a very cute cafe in downtown New Braunfels. It has a lot of yummy pastries and a cute store inside.

9 a.m. Walk around the downtown area of New Braunfels and check out the local boutique shops.

11 a.m. Grab a delicious breakfast at the historic Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar. This was once a cotton gin in 1878. A part of the original brick boiler room can still be view when you arrive to the restaurant. My favorite thing to order is sweet tea and the chicken friend steak. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the Texas Hill Country because it has a beautiful outdoor patio with views of the Guadalupe River. I recommend you to arrive right when they open, because it gets packed very fast and the wait can be long.

1 p.m. Walk around and visit the local shops around downtown Gruene. Some of my favorite stores are the Gruene General Store (which has been in business since 1878), Rusty bugs & Roosters, The Best Li’l Bath Haus, Simply Detailed Boutique, Gruene Antique Company and The Pomegranate. If you want something refreshing grab a latte or smoothie from Gruene Coffee Haus, I love the unique flavors they have. Don’t miss taking a picture by the George Strait mural next to the coffee shop.

3 p.m. As you shop around, stop by The Grapevine for a glass of wine and relax on the patio as you listen to live music. Another place to go wine tasting just within walking distance is Winery on the Gruene. Their wine tasting is not that expensive and the staff is always very friendly.

5 p.m. If you start to get hungry grab a delicious pizza from Inferno’s Wood Fire Oven & Spirits. I love the atmosphere of this place because it is very family-friendly and lively. You can enjoy live music on the patio during the weekends.

7 p.m. Grab a drink and listen to live music at the Gruene Grove. This is a family- owned and family-friendly beer garden with a very chill atmosphere. The patio is large and full of pecan trees. Don’t miss going to the Goodwins Underground Speakeasy.

9 p.m. Walk over to the Texas’ oldest continually operating and most famous dance hall, Gruene Hall. Listen to live local bands and two-step the night away. This dance hall was built in 1878 and not much of the design of the place has change since then. When you visit this place it feels like you are stepping back in time.

Day 3

8 a.m. Every time I visit the town of New Braunfels I always go to Krauses Cafe for breakfast/brunch because they have live music, tasty German food, and lots of great beer options. I also love the atmosphere of this place because everyone is very friendly and nice. On Saturday there is a Farmers Market right next to it from 9am to 1pm. This is the perfect place to hangout with friends and/or family before going tubing or after a fun day of tubing down the Comal River. Krauses Cafe has been in business since 1959.

10 a.m. If you are visiting during the spring and summer seasons, go tubing. This is one of my favorite activities and river tubing in New Braunfels is always a lot of fun. You go through 3 different chutes, which are a blast! The float time can be 3 to 4 hours long. My favorite tubing place is Texas Tubes. The staff is always very friendly and helpful. 10 a.m. If you visit during the fall or winter go hike the Panther Canyon Nature Trail which is about 1.2 miles. If you get lucky you might spot deer on the trail. If you want more of a challenge try the Rim trail, which has more of an incline and a steep drop off to one side.

11 a.m. After hiking go check out Landa Park. This is a beautiful parks with picnic tables, aquatic center and incredible scenery of the river. If you bring a blanket you can lay down and relax as you watch the birds and squirrels run by.

12:30p.m. Enjoy a delicious lunch at Buttermilk Cafe. Try the Cafe Breakfast, it’s a classic! If you want a lunch item try the Country Fried Steak. One of the things I loved about this place was the atmosphere because it felt very cozy and the service was very good.

2 p.m. Leave room for dessert because you will want to grab an ice cream from Rhea Ice Cream. Their ice creams are handmade and they always have very unique flavors. My favorite ice cream flavor is Coffee & Oreos. It’s so good!

3 p.m. Head home after a fun weekend in the Texas Hill Country!

I hope you have an amazing time exploring two of my favorite places in Texas. These two towns really show you a snapshot of Texas culture and past history. My family and I have been coming to New Braunfels for a long time to Schlitterbahn or tube at the Comal River. We recently discovered Gruene, and we have also fell in love with the beautiful architecture, food and history. Both towns offer an ideal Texas getaway combining natural beauty, history, and charm.

Dónde Hospedarse

Hacienda del Río – un hotel a la orilla del río en New Braunfels, cerca del centro de Gruene. Es perfecto para familias, con piscina, fogatas y voleibol. Puedes hacer tubing directamente desde el hotel, sin necesidad de ir a otro lugar. En verano, disfruta de música en vivo. El club ofrece bebidas y café, ideal para relajarte después de un día de diversión. ¡Un lugar perfecto para aventura y descanso!

The Resort at Schlitterbahn: Ofrece una variedad de habitaciones, suites y lofts tipo apartamento. Este lugar tiene una ubicación ideal cerca de atracciones y opciones gastronómicas en New Braunfels. Mi familia y yo nos hemos hospedado aquí varias veces, y nos encantó estar justo dentro del parque.

River Run Condos: Este es un condominio amplio para hasta 6 personas. Cuenta con un doble balcón con una bonita vista al río. Está justo al lado de Texas Tubes, por lo que, si planeas hacer tubing, este es un excelente lugar para hospedarte. También tiene una piscina y áreas de parrillas junto al río. Nos quedamos en este condominio para el cumpleaños de mi mamá hace un año y realmente nos encantó. Además, está a poca distancia a pie del centro de New Braunfels.

Día 1

4 p.m. Llega a tu alojamiento y haz el check-in.

6 p.m. Dirígete a Downtown Social para disfrutar de una deliciosa pizza. Luego, diviértete jugando a los bolos o en los juegos del arcade. Si te gusta visitar edificios históricos, te encantará saber que este lugar fue originalmente la sede de Gerlich Auto Company, el primer concesionario Ford en Texas.

8 p.m. Camina al lado hasta Pour Haus para disfrutar de bebidas y música en vivo. Este es uno de mis bares favoritos en New Braunfels porque tienen un gran patio al aire libre, el ambiente siempre es muy animado, y tienen música en vivo las 7 noches de la semana.

11 p.m. Después de una noche divertida en New Braunfels, regresa a tu alojamiento para descansar un poco.

Día 2

8 a.m. Toma un café y unos pasteles en 2tarts Bakery, un café muy lindo en el centro de New Braunfels. Tiene muchos pasteles deliciosos y una tienda encantadora en su interior.

9 a.m. Pasea por el centro de New Braunfels y explora las boutiques locales.

11 a.m. Disfruta de un delicioso desayuno en el histórico Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar. Este lugar fue una fábrica de algodón en 1878, y aún se puede ver una parte de la sala de calderas de ladrillo original al llegar al restaurante. Mis favoritos son el té dulce y el chicken fried steak. Es uno de mis restaurantes favoritos en el Texas Hill Country porque tiene un hermoso patio al aire libre con vistas al río Guadalupe. Te recomiendo llegar justo cuando abren, ya que se llena rápido y la espera puede ser larga.

1 p.m. Pasea y visita las tiendas locales en el centro de Gruene. Algunas de mis tiendas favoritas son Gruene General Store (que está en funcionamiento desde 1878), Rusty Bugs & Roosters, The Best Li’l Bath Haus, Simply Detailed Boutique, Gruene Antique Company y The Pomegranate. Si quieres algo refrescante, toma un latte o un smoothie en Gruene Coffee Haus; me encantan los sabores únicos que tienen. No olvides tomarte una foto junto al mural de George Strait junto a la cafetería.

3 p.m. Mientras haces tus compras, pasa por The Grapevine para disfrutar una copa de vino y relájate en el patio escuchando música en vivo. Otro lugar para hacer una cata de vinos a poca distancia es Winery on the Gruene. La cata de vinos no es muy cara y el personal es siempre muy amable.

5 p.m. Si tienes hambre, disfruta de una deliciosa pizza en Inferno’s Wood Fire Oven & Spirits. Me encanta el ambiente de este lugar porque es familiar y animado. Puedes disfrutar de música en vivo en el patio los fines de semana.

7 p.m. Toma una bebida y escucha música en vivo en Gruene Grove. Este es un beer garden de ambiente tranquilo y familiar, lleno de árboles de nuez. No te pierdas el Goodwins Underground Speakeasy.

9 p.m. Camina hasta Gruene Hall, el salón de baile más antiguo y famoso de Texas, que ha estado en funcionamiento continuo. Escucha bandas locales en vivo y disfruta bailando al estilo Texas two-step. Este salón fue construido en 1878 y no ha cambiado mucho en su diseño desde entonces. Al visitarlo, sientes como si retrocedieras en el tiempo.

Día 3

8 a.m. Cada vez que visito la ciudad de New Braunfels, siempre voy a Krauses Cafe para desayunar o hacer brunch porque tienen música en vivo, deliciosa comida alemana y muchas opciones excelentes de cerveza. Me encanta el ambiente de este lugar porque todos son muy amables. Los sábados, justo al lado, hay un mercado de agricultores de 9 a.m. a 1 p.m. Este es el lugar perfecto para pasar el rato con amigos o familia antes o después de un día divertido haciendo tubing en el río Comal. Krauses Cafe ha estado en funcionamiento desde 1959.

10 a.m. Si visitas durante la primavera o el verano, haz tubing. Esta es una de mis actividades favoritas, y hacer tubing en el río de New Braunfels siempre es muy divertido. Pasas por 3 diferentes canales que son emocionantes. El tiempo de flotación puede durar entre 3 y 4 horas. Mi lugar favorito para hacer tubing es Texas Tubes. El personal siempre es muy amable y servicial. Aquí tienes mi lista de Amazon con todo lo que necesitas para hacer tubing y estar preparado para disfrutar al máximo.

10 a.m. Si visitas durante el otoño o el invierno, haz una caminata por Panther Canyon Nature Trail, que tiene aproximadamente 1.2 millas. Si tienes suerte, podrías ver ciervos en el sendero. Si quieres un desafío, prueba el Rim Trail, que tiene una mayor inclinación y un acantilado empinado a un lado.

11 a.m. Después de la caminata, visita Landa Park. Este es un parque hermoso con mesas de picnic, un centro acuático y un paisaje increíble junto al río. Si llevas una manta, puedes tumbarte y relajarte mientras observas a los pájaros y las ardillas pasar.

12:30 p.m. Disfruta de un delicioso almuerzo en Buttermilk Cafe. Prueba el Café Breakfast, ¡es un clásico! Si prefieres un plato de almuerzo, pide el Country Fried Steak. Una de las cosas que más me gustó de este lugar fue el ambiente acogedor y el excelente servicio.

2 p.m. Deja espacio para el postre porque querrás probar un helado en Rhea Ice Cream. Sus helados son artesanales y siempre tienen sabores únicos. Mi sabor favorito es Café y Oreos. ¡Es delicioso!

3 p.m. Regresa a casa después de un divertido fin de semana en el Texas Hill Country.
