Intro

My family and I spent a few Christmases in New Orleans, Louisiana when my brother lived there, and the holiday season in the city is truly special. The atmosphere is festive, and the experience is like no other. One of our favorite things to do was walk through the French Quarter to admire the beautiful Christmas decorations and the amazing architecture. We also loved grabbing a cup of coffee or hot cocoa with some delicious beignets.

In this two-day itinerary, I’ll share my favorite places to see Christmas lights and decorations, highlight some annual holiday traditions, and suggest fun things to do in New Orleans. Where to Stay

New Orleans has a variety of hotels from historic to modern. Below are some of the best hotels in New Orleans where I have stayed throughout the years with my family.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel New Orleans – This hotel is located in Canal Street and the location is amazing since it’s very close to the French Quarter, Jackson Square restaurants and cafes.

Hilton New Orleans Riverside – Location is very convenient to get to other tourist sites around New Orleans. Some rooms have a beautiful view of the Mississippi River.

Holiday Inn Hotel French Quarter-Chateau Lemoyne – One block off Bourbon Street. Cafe Beignet is just around the corner. It’s a budget hotel and the price is very good for the location.

Omni Riverfront New Orleans – In a great location, close to many restaurants and attractions. Friendly and good service. An older building with a modern interior.

Best Way to Move Around

The French Quarter and other areas around are very walkable. But if you need to use a car sharing company you can use Uber or ride the vintage streetcars as you move around the city. If you are staying by the French Quarter is better to not have a car because parking can be a little complicated and hotels charge for valet or garage parking.

Another great way to see the city is by using the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour. You will be able to take in the highlights of New Orleans at your own leisure as you hop-on and hop- off this double decker bus.

Day 1

9 a.m. For breakfast head to Ruby Sleeper in Magazine Street. This is one of my favorite restaurants for brunch in New Orleans and I love this location because you can always find a seat without having to wait too long. Try the Egg Cochon Bennies, they are super yummy!

10:30 a.m. After a tasty breakfast enjoy a day of holiday shopping and sightseeing on Magazine Street. This is a very famous street which is 6-miles long and is filled with a variety of local boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, museums and restaurants. Some of my favorite in Magazine Street are:

• French Truck Coffee – a local coffee shop with delicious coffee and teas.
• Fleurty Girl – New Orlean’s boutique shop with lots of cute souvenirs for you to take home.
• Miette – Mom and daughter owned boutique shop with costume pieces and accessories.
• Alligator Museum – A fascinating museum featuring captivating exhibits and intriguing facts about alligators. It offers a diverse collection of unique trinkets, fossils, and curiosities. The staff is warm, welcoming, and highly knowledgeable.

2 p.m. Have a delicious lunch at Mother’s Restaurant, which is a local favorite. This place is now one of my favorite restaurants in New Orleans and I plan to visit it every-time I go back. My boyfriend and I ordered the Seafood Platter Extra Extra and everything in it was very good and crispy. It was the perfect portion for the two of us.

4 p.m. Head to Vue Orleans, which is an observation deck with 360-degree view of the city. It also has exhibitions where you will learn about the culture and history of New Orleans. From the stunning skyline to the immersive cultural displays this place is a must-visit!

6: 30 p.m. Enjoy a delicious dinner at Arabella Casa Di Pasta, this place has amazing homemade pastas with flavorful sauces. You can even build-your own pasta. The service is excellent and the prices are reasonable.

8:30 p.m. Go to Frenchmen Street and enjoy more holiday shopping at Frenchmen Art Bazaar, an eclectic market that comes to life at night. You will be able to see local artists showcase their creations, from paintings to handcrafted jewelry. It’s the perfect place to find unique souvenirs and gifts.

9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. After some local shopping head to the different music venues to enjoy live music and dance the night away. Frenchmen Street is where the locals of New Orleans like to go out because is a place where the music, art, and spirit of the city come together to create a very unique experience. Below are some of my favorite spots on Frenchmen Street:

30°/-90° – upscale music venue with funk and modern music performances.

The Spotted Cat – a cozy iconic venue know for its authentic live jazz.

Apple Barrel Bar – Small and laid-back spot with raw and authentic live music.

Cafe Negril – lively venue known for reggae, rock, and blues performances.

Favela Chic – a dynamic venue that brings the vibrant energy of Brazil. Known for eclectic mix of live music. It offers a multicultural atmosphere!

Day 2

9 a.m. Enjoy a delicious breakfast at Café Fleur De Lis. The atmosphere of this place is amazing and all of the staff is very friendly. I recommend you to try the hot chocolate and Cochon de Lait Benetict.

10: 30 a.m. Walk to Lafayette Square to take pictures with the big Santa.

11 a.m. Head to the Roosevelt Hotel to take your family Christmas pictures. The lobby of this place is beautifully decorated during the holiday season and it’s the perfect place to take some holiday pictures.

11:30 a.m. Stop by the The Royal Sonesta New Orleans, which is another hotel with a beautiful lobby decoration and hallway full of Christmas trees.

12:30 p.m. After a morning of taking pictures and seeing Christmas decorations go to one of my favorite beignet places in New Orleans, Cafe Beignet in Bourbon Street. Try the beignets by themselves or with chocolate or strawberry sauce. If you get hungry there is a menu full of New Orleans dishes for you to try. Some of the things I love about this place is the variety of coffee options, the beautiful outdoor courtyard, and there is live jazz everyday from 10 a.m. to closing.

2 p.m. After relaxing head to the French Market to do more holiday shopping. As you walk to the French Market take pictures with the beautiful buildings around the French Quarter, which will be beautifully decorated with holiday decorations and lights. The French Market has been open since 1791. It’s one of my favorite places to go for holiday shopping because you can always find unique items and cute New Orleans t-shirts.

4 p.m. Enjoy a delicious dinner at Napoleon House. This place is over 200 years old and is the first establishment in America to offer Pimm’s Cups. When you step inside the restaurant you will be transported to the old New Orleans. Try the gumbo and the famous muffuletta If the weather is nice enjoy your meal on the lovely patio.

6 p.m. Get in line for Caroling in Jackson Square. This is very unique experience you can only do in New Orleans. My family and I did it last year and loved it. You can definitely feel the holiday spirit as you sign carols with hundredths of people. This is a free, annual New Orleans holiday tradition that takes place on the last Sunday before Christmas.

8:30 p.m. Grab a hot chocolate and beignets from the famous Cafe Du Monde. This is my mom’s favorite beignet place. We like going to the one right on the French Quarter because you can enjoy music as you eat your beignets and enjoy your Café au lait. The service there is always very good.

Dónde Hospedarse

Nueva Orleans tiene una gran variedad de hoteles, desde históricos hasta modernos. A continuación, te comparto algunos de los mejores hoteles en Nueva Orleans donde me he alojado a lo largo de los años con mi familia.

Si te hospedas cerca del Barrio Francés, es mejor no tener coche, ya que el estacionamiento puede ser un poco complicado y los hoteles cobran por el servicio de valet o estacionamiento en garaje.

Otra excelente manera de conocer la ciudad es usando el Tour en Autobús Hop-On Hop-Off. Con este autobús de dos pisos, podrás disfrutar de los puntos destacados de Nueva Orleans a tu propio ritmo, subiendo y bajando cuando lo desees.

Día 1

9:00 a.m. Para el desayuno, dirígete a Ruby Sleeper en Magazine Street. Este es uno de mis restaurantes favoritos para el brunch en Nueva Orleans, y me encanta esta ubicación porque siempre encuentras asiento sin tener que esperar mucho. Prueba los Egg Cochon Bennies, ¡son deliciosos!

10:30 a.m. Después de un sabroso desayuno, disfruta de un día de compras navideñas y turismo en Magazine Street, una famosa calle de 6 millas de largo llena de boutiques locales, galerías de arte, tiendas de antigüedades, museos y restaurantes. Algunos de mis favoritos en Magazine Street son:

• French Truck Coffee: Una cafetería local con delicioso café y té.
• Fleurty Girl: Una boutique de Nueva Orleans con muchos souvenirs lindos para llevar a casa.

Este lugar se ha convertido en uno de mis restaurantes favoritos en Nueva Orleans y planeo visitarlo cada vez que regrese. Mi novio y yo pedimos el Seafood Platter Extra Extra, y todo estaba muy bueno y crujiente, perfecto para compartir entre los dos.

4:00 p.m. Ve a Vue Orleans, un mirador con vista de 360 grados de la ciudad. También tiene exposiciones donde aprenderás sobre la cultura e historia de Nueva Orleans. Desde el impresionante horizonte hasta las exhibiciones culturales inmersivas, ¡este lugar es una visita obligada!

6:30 p.m. Disfruta de una deliciosa cena en Arabella Casa Di Pasta, un lugar con pastas caseras increíbles y salsas llenas de sabor. Incluso puedes crear tu propia pasta. El servicio es excelente y los precios son razonables.

8:30 p.m. Dirígete a Frenchmen Street para disfrutar de más compras navideñas en el Frenchmen Art Bazaar, un mercado ecléctico que cobra vida por la noche. Podrás ver a artistas locales exhibir sus creaciones, desde pinturas hasta joyería artesanal. Es el lugar perfecto para encontrar souvenirs y regalos únicos.

9:30 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. Después de hacer algunas compras locales, ve a los diferentes lugares de música en Frenchmen Street para disfrutar de música en vivo y bailar hasta la madrugada. Es donde los locales de Nueva Orleans suelen salir, ya que aquí la música, el arte y el espíritu de la ciudad se fusionan para crear una experiencia muy especial. Algunos de mis lugares favoritos en Frenchmen Street son:

9:00 a.m. Disfruta de un delicioso desayuno en Café Fleur De Lis. La atmósfera de este lugar es increíble y todo el personal es muy amable. Te recomiendo probar el chocolate caliente y el Cochon de Lait Benedict.

10:30 a.m. Camina hacia Lafayette Square para tomarte fotos con el gran Santa Claus.

11:00 a.m. Dirígete al Roosevelt Hotel para tomar tus fotos navideñas familiares. El lobby de este hotel está bellamente decorado durante la temporada navideña, lo que lo convierte en el lugar perfecto para tomar unas fotos festivas.

11:30 a.m. Haz una parada en el The Royal Sonesta New Orleans, otro hotel con una hermosa decoración en el lobby y un pasillo lleno de árboles de Navidad.

12:30 p.m. Después de una mañana de fotos y decoraciones navideñas, ve a uno de mis lugares favoritos para beignets en Nueva Orleans, Cafe Beignet en Bourbon Street. Prueba los beignets solos o con salsa de chocolate o fresa. Si tienes hambre, el menú está lleno de platos típicos de Nueva Orleans. Algunas de las cosas que me encantan de este lugar son la variedad de opciones de café, el hermoso patio al aire libre y la música en vivo todos los días desde las 10 a.m. hasta el cierre.

2:00 p.m. Después de relajarte, dirígete al French Market para más compras navideñas. Mientras caminas hacia el French Market, toma fotos de los hermosos edificios alrededor del Barrio Francés, que estarán bellamente decorados con adornos y luces navideñas. Al entrar al restaurante, te sentirás transportado al antiguo Nueva Orleans. Prueba el gumbo y la famosa muffuletta. Si el clima es agradable, disfruta tu comida en el encantador patio.

6:00 p.m. Haz fila para el Caroling in Jackson Square. Esta es una experiencia única que solo puedes vivir en Nueva Orleans. Mi familia y yo lo hicimos el año pasado y nos encantó. Puedes sentir el espíritu navideño al cantar villancicos con cientos de personas. Es una tradición navideña gratuita que se celebra el último domingo antes de Navidad.

8:30 p.m. Toma un chocolate caliente y beignets en el famoso Cafe Du Monde. Este es el lugar favorito de mi mamá para los beignets. Nos gusta ir al que está justo en el Barrio Francés porque puedes disfrutar de la música mientras comes tus beignets y disfrutas de tu café au lait. El servicio allí siempre es excelente.
